Dear Dick,

On this very special occasion when your friends are joining you to celebrate your eightieth birthday, I think of the many happy hours which I spent with you and with Winifred over more than fifty years. I particularly remember the pleasant evenings at your apartment in George(?) Square and later at your home in Edinburgh which I could only reach by climbing numerous steps; and more recently at your charming home in Dunbar which I visited with Marlies some years ago..

I also remember with great pleasure our numerous scientific (and not so scientific) conversations and the hospitality that you and Winifred extended to me over so many years. I am most grateful for it.
